Who is Hokuyuu?

Hokuyuu is a Tokyo-based freelance illustrator who works under the Japanese name 北熊 (ほくゆう). On the cards the credit is printed "Hokuyuu".

Hokuyuu also draws for other card games: Duel Masters, Cardfight!! Vanguard, Buddyfight, WIXOSS and the Digimon Card Game. The list of work also takes in light novel illustrations and art for the mobile games Puzzle & Dragons and Azur Lane.

The first One Piece cards came in OP04 Kingdoms of Intrigue (English release September 2023). Since then there's been at least one Hokuyuu card in almost every booster, plus Leaders in four starter decks. Hokuyuu also drew Portgas.D.Ace for Official Card Sleeve 10, which is a sleeve, not a card, so it isn't on this page.

The art

How do you recognise a Hokuyuu card?

First, the credit. On One Piece Leaders and Characters the illustrator's name sits in small vertical type on the right edge, just under the power. Look for "Hokuyuu" with a double u. After that, the art gives it away.

  • Diagonal action, aimed at you. Characters lunge out of the card along a diagonal, with a fist, foot or blade huge in the foreground. Monkey.D.Luffy ST13-003 throws his fist into the lens, Monkey.D.Luffy OP04-090 is coiled up and coming straight at you, and Edward.Newgate ST15-002 from PRB02 swings his arm right through the frame.
  • Slash lines and shards. Thin light streaks, sword arcs and broken-glass shards cut across the art. Look at the teal arcs on Kouzuki Oden EB01-001, the red streaks across Shanks OP13-028, and the shattered shards around Edward.Newgate ST15-002.
  • Saturated violet, magenta and teal with gold glints. Lots of sparkle, too. Kouzuki Oden EB01-001 is purple and teal, Gecko Moria OP14-104 is purple and yellow with bats and claws reaching out, and Charlotte Linlin EB03-034 is purple with an orange flame burst.
  • Black-and-white ink with one hot colour. A separate series where the character is pure manga ink and only the energy gets colour: the ST13 Three Brothers alt arts with orange-red fire, the ST21 and ST29 Luffy alt arts with pastel rainbow splashes, and Izo, Portgas.D.Ace and Marco in ST22.
  • Crowded frames and big faces. On Kouzuki Oden EB01-001 the whole crew crowds in around him, and faces are wide open: gritted teeth on Capone "Gang" Bege OP11-101, a full shout on Wyper OP15-114, a laugh on Monkey.D.Luffy ST21-014.

The odd one out is Uta OP13-023: soft pastel colour and a light, calm frame. Same artist, very different mood.

Did Hokuyuu draw the Oden Leader alt art?

Yes, if it's EB01-001. The Kouzuki Oden Leader alt art from EB01 Memorial Collection is Hokuyuu's work. Oden bursts out of the middle of the card under a wide, flat hat, mouth open mid-shout, while teal sword arcs slice across a violet background. His retainers crowd in around every edge, so the frame feels packed from corner to corner.

Two other Oden cards come up when you search for "Oden alt art": the OP01-031 Leader alt art from Romance Dawn and the black-and-white ST22-005 alt art from the Ace & Newgate deck. Neither is by Hokuyuu.

Which Three Brothers Leaders did Hokuyuu draw?

All three. Sabo ST13-001, Portgas.D.Ace ST13-002 and Monkey.D.Luffy ST13-003 from ST13 Ultra Deck: The Three Brothers are Hokuyuu's, in three looks. The deck version is full colour. The parallel from the deck's bonus pack is pure black-and-white ink, and only the fire around each brother keeps its orange and red. Behind them sits a faint line pattern like a sea chart. The Premium Card Collection Leader Collection has a third version: the same brothers on a dark ground with gold.

Each art is built to move at you. Luffy throws a fist straight into the lens with a knee up, Ace twists through a ring of flame, and Sabo comes in low with his pipe raised. The same three arts also came out with a gold frame in the Premium Card Collection Leader Collection.

Which sets and products have Hokuyuu cards?

Most of the alt arts here are Rare and Super Rare cards from regular boosters, so they turn up in normal packs. Collectors reckoned on one of each ST13 alt art Leader per six decks or so.

How many One Piece cards has Hokuyuu drawn?

46 different English cards, from OP04 (September 2023) to OP17 (August 2026). Count every version (alt art, reprint, promo) and it comes to 65 English prints. This page shows 59 of them: one entry per look, so reprints with the same art and frame are left out. There are also a handful of Japan-only promo prints.

What is Hokuyuu's most famous One Piece card?
